Much of American sports history can be traced back to the 19th century. The Rugby Union, Baseball, Basketball, American Football as well as Volleyball were all created in the nineteenth century. In 1894 the International Olympic Committee was formed, and in Athens, Greece the first Summer Olympic Games were held in 1896.
Many journals were written on the emergence of athletics in 19th century life. Topics such as the history of football, when did baseball start or who invented basketball were common subjects in these periodicals. There is also a rich sports history of outdoor activiites such as hunting , angling, yachting, cricket, golf and lawn tennis. Famous athletes are the subject of vintage magazine articles from this era, as well as documentation of the history of women’s sports.
